• Enjoy the views. Kerry Park on West Highland Drive is one of the most popular spots in the city to view the rest of the city. But, as Roger Sale has pointed out in his “Seeing Seattle,” just north of the corner of Fifth North and Lynn is “one of Seattle’s least known great views, looking north and east” toward the fresh-water riddled city-scape and Cascades.
• Just west of the Kerry Park overlook is Marshall Park, better known as Betty Bowen Viewpoint. Bowen, a Queen Anne resident, was a great supporter of local artists back in the day. Works by some of the Northwest’s most famous artists are cast into concrete panels here. The view toward Bainbridge Island and the Olympic range is stunning. Across the street Parson’s Gardens, a gift to the city from the family, has been called elegant. It’s peaceful, too.
• Check out what’s happening at Seattle Pacific University. The private university, beyond its athletic events, has a range of artistic, spiritual and cultural happenings open to the public. www.spu.edu.
• Take the kids to the Seattle Center Fountain. On summer days, it’s one of Seattle’s great places, complete with music, synchronized waterworks and excellent people watching.
• Take a walk. A great, little 3.3-mile stroll follows the course of the annual Crown of Queen Anne Fun Run & Walk. Start out at the intersection of Five Corners Hardware, 305 W. McGraw Street and head northwest on West McGraw Place, cross Queen Anne Avenue North to McGraw Street to Wheeler Street and on to Bigelow all the way to Prospect until you cross the Counterbalance and follow West Highland Drive to Seventh Avenue West, where you turn toward your starting point. Wonderful views, interesting dwellings, and notable trees, including chestnuts, big leaf lindens and oaks.
• Explore the Pacific Science Center. Dinosaurs, water and science are all jumbled together in this fun facility from the 1962 Worlds Fair.
• Enjoy the local arts and entertainment. Uptown Queen Anne is Seattle’s cultural nexus for theatre, opera, ballet and musical events.
• Bike or walk along the Burke-Gilman Trail that winds along the north side of the Lake Washington Ship Canal, offering views rarely seen by car.
• Visit the Queen Anne Farmers Market, West Crockett and Queen Anne Avenue North, Thursdays, 3-7 p. m. June to October. Live music, chef presentations and locally grown food.
• Take a guided tour from the Queen Anne Historical Society through Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Learn about the history of the community and some of its famous residents.
• Take the stairs up Queen Anne Hill. Urban hiker Thomas Horton has developed a map of the “Pedestrian Public Stairs of Queen Anne Hill.” According to Horton there are about 550 stairways all over this steep part of town. His map, which can be purchased at the Queen Anne Books, shows the way.
