Third-graders at West Woodland Elementary School (5601 Fourth Ave. N.W.) took a field trip on Jan. 15 to Nickelsville, the homeless encampment in Ballard. The students are actively learning their social studies unit, Democracy in Action, which focuses on communities. They chose to study their own Ballard neighborhood and created maps with local businesses, landmarks, buildings and other locations. The kids even created characters and jobs in the community.
To extend their community learning, students opted to study homelessness in Ballard, focusing on Nickelsville. They collected bottled water, socks, flashlights, hand warmers, protein bars and more from the entire school. They then walked to the encampment to hand-deliver supplies.
